Contains information pertaining to the following military units: Bayard's Company, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry Battalion; 1st Pennsylvania Infantry Battalion; 119th Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 11th Division; 89th Regiment; Kiplinger's Company. General description of the collection: The Centre County Historical Society collection includes: a Civil War letter to John Blair Linn, 51st Infantry Regiment from a tailor in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania (Dec. 30, 1862). Mexican War materials include: a copy of the Daily American Staff (Dec. 19, 1847) which includes accounts of the battles of Contreras and Churubusco by Winfield Scott and James Shields of the 1st Brigade of the 4th Division of the United States Army in Mexico. Revolutionary War materials include: muster roll of Captain Stephen Bayard's Company, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry Battalion, Fort Ticonderoga (Oct.-Nov. 1776) and a brief account is included of William Wilson's service in the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment especially at the battle of Monmouth and the enlistment roll of Wilson's Company (1780). Miscellaneous official militia papers include: 119th Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 11th Division (1807); 89th Regiment (1810); Kiplinger's Comany (1814).

John Blair Linn was born on October 16, 1831, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Linn attended the Lewisburg Academy and Marshall College in Mercersburg and graduated in 1846. He practiced law in Union and Sullivan counties before he moved his practice to Centre County in 1871. Linn became interested in preserving the history of his home and the surrounding area.
